Shattuck W. Hartwell, M.D., F.A.C.S, formerly Director of Professional Staff Affairs (Chief of Staff) of the Cleveland Clinic and Vice Chairman of its Board of Governors, died at his home in Auburn, Ohio of lymphoma complicated by Parkinson's Disease.
Dr. Hartwell was 80 years of age. In addition to his service at the Clinic, he was a noted leader in Cleveland's non-profit community, where his interests leaned towards music and education.
Among his accomplishments at the Clinic as Director of Professional Staff Affairs between 1974 and 1986, he spearheaded the development of the Clinic's cornerstone professional review and development programs: the Annual Professional Review and the Staff Compensation Program, which organized Staff compensation around a formal framework and review process. These programs had the benefit of equalizing compensation differentials between male and female members of the Medical Staff.
Dr. Hartwell joined the Clinic's Plastic Surgery department in 1963, and was acting Chairman of that Department between 1983 and 1985. In addition to his medical and administrative responsibilities, Dr. Hartwell took a strong interest in bioethics and art at the Clinic. He created the Clinic's Department of Bioethics and its Archives and chaired the Aesthetics Committee. He was also the author of To Act as a Unit, the second edition of the history of the Cleveland Clinic. He retired from the Clinic as Director of the I.H. Page Center for Creative Thinking in Medicine.
Dr. Hartwell was widely known in Cleveland for his extensive service to a number of non-profit organizations in leadership positions. An avid chamber musician, he served on the board of Apollo's Fire (the Cleveland baroque orchestra) for many years, which recently noted his contributions to that organization at a gala benefit in his honor. On that occasion Jeannette Sorrell, Artistic Director, wrote "Shad's work – and artistry – as a plastic surgeon are renowned, and his reverence for culture and humanism was an inspiration to his colleagues at the Clinic and in the philanthropic community."
He served at various times on the boards of the Musart Society of the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Cleveland Institute of Music, the Cleveland Museum of Natural History, WVIZ-TV, University School, Town Hall of Cleveland, the Cleveland Medical Library Association, the Ohio Humanities Council, and the French Heritage Society, among other organizations. He served as a campaign leader for United Way Services of Cleveland.
Dr. Hartwell grew up in Muskegon, Michigan. He was educated at Philips Exeter Academy, and received his B.A. from Amherst College and his M.D. from the University of Michigan. He took additional training in the Program in Health Services Management at Harvard University's Schools of Public Health and Business Administration.
Between 1955 and 1957 he served as a Lieutenant in the United States Navy.
He was a Past President of Cleveland's Rowfant Club, and an active member of both the Tavern Club and the Chagrin Valley Hunt Club.
Dr. Hartwell is survived by his wife of 56 years, Mary Jane Davis Hartwell; three children: Davis Hartwell (Jane)of Portland, Maine, Emily Taylor (John Maxwell Taylor)of Cleveland Heights, Ohio, and Samuel Hartwell Kimberly), also of Cleveland Heights; two sisters; and eight grandchildren.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, October 31, 2009 at St Paul's Episcopal Church, 2747 Fairmount Boulevard, Cleveland Heights, Ohio, with a musical prelude one half hour prior to the service.
