Al was born in Avalon, Pennsylvania, and shortly after his high school graduation in 1945, joined the US Navy. He served aboard the USS Repose and USS Sussex, traveling to both the Asiatic Pacific and American Theaters.

He returned from the service in 1949 and enrolled in The State Teachers College of West Chester, PA. This is where he met his future wife, Mary Lou Bollman, and shortly after they both graduated in 1953, they were married and moved to the Cleveland Area.

Both Al and Mary Lou began their teaching careers in the Shaker Heights School System. Mary Lou went on to teach in the elementary schools of the South Euclid-Lyndhurst system for a total of 30 years and Al was a teacher/coach in the Shaker system for 38 years.

Al coached and taught Physical Education in Byron Junior High before he went to the high school as an assistant football coach for five years and then as the head football coach for twenty three years. He was also a basketball coach and the varsity golf coach. His 1967 Golf Team won the Ohio State Title. His 1985 Varsity Football Team was undefeated and earned him the Greater Cleveland Coaches Associations Coach of the Year Award. He was named the Lake Erie League Football Coach of the Year on three different occasions. Al was also an avid high-average bowler and scratch golfer even after his retirement in 1990.

Al is survived by his wife, Mary Lou Raymond (nee Bollman) of Lyndhurst, OH, his sons, Charles M. of Lakewood, OH, and David S. (Patricia) of Twinsburg, OH. Als son, William A., died in 1993. He was the dear grandfather of Brandon, Diana and Thomas.

The family prefers that those who wish may make contributions in his name to The Hospice of the Western Reserve, 300 E. 185th St., Cleveland, OH 44119 or an organization of choice.
